How to Send, Resend and Attach Stripe Invoices by Email

Samih Sghier, FounderPublished October 6, 2026

To email a Stripe invoice, go to Invoices > Create Invoice, pick the customer, add the items, choose Email invoice with link, then click Review invoice and send it. Stripe attaches the invoice PDF to that email. To send it again, open the invoice and click Send invoice, or download it with Invoice PDF to attach to your own reply.

Every option needs an email address on the customer's Stripe record. To have invoices attached to your replies when customers ask, connect Stripe to InboxPilot (we make it).

Email a new invoice from the Stripe Dashboard

Use this for a one-off invoice, such as a project fee or a custom order.

  1. In the Stripe Dashboard, go to Invoices and click Create Invoice.
  2. Pick the customer, or click Add new customer and enter their name and email address.
  3. Click Add one-time item, or pick a saved product, then enter the Quantity and Price.
  4. Choose the delivery: Email invoice with link sends a payment page and the PDF, and Email invoice without link sends the PDF only.
  5. Click Review invoice, add any extra recipients, and send it.

Note: Every invoice email from Stripe carries the PDF. You can turn that off in Stripe's invoice settings.

Subscription invoices go out on their own once Send finalized invoices to customers is on, under Settings > Billing > Subscriptions and emails. When an invoice charges a card on file instead, the receipt email carries both the invoice PDF and the receipt PDF, as long as Successful payments is on.

Resend a Stripe invoice or receipt

Use this when a customer asks for another copy, which is a routine customer service email.

  1. Go to Invoices and click the customer's invoice.
  2. Click Send invoice. Stripe shows a preview of the invoice page, then emails it again with the PDF.
  3. For a paid invoice, click Send receipt on the same page to send the receipt instead.

For a payment with no invoice, go to Transactions > Payments and click the payment. Under Receipt history, open the ⋯ menu and choose Send receipt. You can enter several addresses there, separated by commas.

Attach a Stripe invoice PDF to your own email

Use this when you're answering the customer from Gmail or Outlook and want the invoice in the same thread.

  1. Open the invoice in Stripe and click Invoice PDF to download it.
  2. In Gmail, reply to the customer, click the paperclip (Attach files) and choose the PDF. In Outlook, click Attach file and choose it from your computer.
  3. Put the invoice number and amount in the reply, so the customer can search for it later.

If finding the right invoice will take a while, send a short acknowledgment first and the PDF when you have it.

Send invoice emails to a finance team as well

Use this when someone other than your contact pays, such as the customer's accounts payable team.

  1. Go to Customers and click the customer.
  2. In the Details section, click Edit.
  3. Under Billing information, untick Same as account email and enter the address for the To line.
  4. Click Add more recipients and fill in Emails to CC.

Stripe then uses these addresses for the customer's billing emails, receipts included. The API can't set them, so add them in the Dashboard.

Stripe steps checked against Stripe's guides to invoicing in the Dashboard, customer emails and receipts on 2026-10-06.

Stripe invoice email not arriving

If the customer has no email address, Stripe has nowhere to send it. Add one under Details > Edit on their page, then resend the invoice.

An invoice created with Send invoice or payment page link manually gets no email from Stripe. Copy its payment link and send it yourself.

Test payments don't get automatic receipts. Send a manual receipt to see what customers receive.

To check whether an email left Stripe, open the customer's page: Stripe keeps a log of customer emails from the last 60 days. Receipt links expire after 30 days, and Stripe emails a fresh one when the customer enters their address.

Attach invoices automatically when customers ask, with InboxPilot

Use this when customers email you for invoices and the work is finding the right one. InboxPilot reads the request in Gmail or Outlook, finds the invoice in your Stripe account and drafts the reply with the PDF attached.

  1. In InboxPilot, open Integrations, click the Stripe card, then click Connect Stripe.

Note: New accounts get a 7-day free trial, and Starter is $39 a month, as of 2026-10-06.

  2. In Stripe, choose your account and approve the read-only permissions.

  3. Back on Integrations, check that the Stripe card shows your account as connected.

From then on, an email like "Can you resend my September invoice?" gets a draft reply with that invoice attached. It matches the sender's address to a Stripe customer, then picks the invoice by the number quoted, the month named, or else the latest one.

A reply that carries an invoice always waits as a draft for someone to send, even with auto-replies on, because a sender's address can be faked. The PDF goes only on a reply to that customer, with at most colleagues from your own domain copied in.

Someone who pays under a different email address gets a draft without the PDF.

The same connection answers questions about charges, refunds and subscriptions with the amounts and dates Stripe holds. For refunds you answer by hand, start from these refund email templates.
